My husband and I are doing a marathon of our newest favorite addiction: ‘Orange is the New Black.’ Yes, OITNB is an addiction just like — oddly — nutmeg can be. Yes, you heard me… Nutmeg. That sweet and spicy spice found in our Christmas cookies, our eggnog, mulled cider. We learned this tonight during our OITNB marathon.
During the power outage, two inmates sneak into the kitchen and get high on nutmeg!! I was shocked and had to learn about it. Off to google I go… First, I must say, I will NEVER try this… here is what I learned: Nutmeg contains an organic compound called myristicin, which is chemically similar to mescaline, the active compound in peyote, and may be converted in the body to one of the related amphetamine-like psychedelic Eating four to eight teaspoons of ground nutmeg causes mild hallucinations, warmth in the limbs, dizziness, nausea, cottonmouth, paranoia, difficulty urinating and a hangover. “Some users compare the nutmeg ‘high’ to a hellish case of the flu. To make things worse, nutmeg consumption is easily the most inconvenient way to get high–its effects kick in five to six hours after ingestion. That’s like having to drink a six-pack at lunch in anticipation of happy hour.” (I can’t take credit for that last sentence, find more here: Read more: http://www.cracked.com/).
If you google ‘smoking nutmeg’ you will find a lot of different stories with experiences. They range from an awesome stoner experience to walking on the brink of death. So, trippin off nutmeg is not something I would recommend. The girls in OITNB got high immediately and didn’t experience any nasty side effects, at least what we saw. Lesson, don’t believe everything you see on TV. OITNB what will you bring us next? Apple seeds contain cyanide… interesting.
