I am seriously disturbed by this commercial. SERIOUSLY disturbed. What were the ‘Mad Men’ at the advertising agency thinking? They are mad, truly crazy on so many levels. Come on Don Draper, I know that you had a problem with cigarettes, I do too, but did you have to create a whole new class of people that now cannot be discriminated against? Maybe they are smart because I am about to go off in a whole blog post venting about the puppet fucker… no wait, they are not smart, crazy… certifiable.
This commercial bothers me. It is sick. This is one in a series of commercials. They all feature the same marionettes and the same human. Its all very weird. We now have a whole new type of discrimination. When you watch this commercial do you laugh? Its not politically correct — I kind of laugh that awkward weird laugh. You know the type. The “I-feel-like-this-is-supposed-to-be-funny-but-it-not-and-if-I-laugh-out-loud-at-this-commercial-I-may-have-a-discrimination-lawsuit-slapped-on-me” type of laugh. WHAT were they thinking?? And, what is wrong with the husband/actor? He tries to be into that sexy marionette dance, but comes off looking upset, weird, almost like he doesn’t know what to do. How did they tell this dude to act? Did they stick a female in the marionette’s place for effect when filming? Probably not, because judging on this dude’s reaction to his strung out fake wife, they would have had to stick a handicap person with a severe disability in her spot. And again, that is wrong. Another potential lawsuit for DirectTV.
This commercial is wrong on so many levels. The whole ad campaign is wrong. A definition for advertising according to Wikipedia is “… is a form of marketing communication used to encourage, persuade, or manipulate an audience (viewers, readers or listeners; sometimes a specific group) to take or continue to take some action. Most commonly, the desired result is to drive consumer behavior with respect to a commercial offering, although political and ideological advertising is also common.” Wikipedia further goes on to teach us that “commercial advertisers often seek to generate increased consumption of their products or services through ‘branding’, which involves associating a product name or image with certain qualities in the minds of consumers.”
So DirecTV is seeking to ‘brand’ their product so consumers associate them with puppet fuckers. I have seen at least two other of these commercials featuring our husband puppet fucker, one where the token friend offends the puppet fucker by saying he hates wires, then our wife-y marionette makes an un-Martha Stewart like début spilling lemonade all over the place and the other where they have a marionette kid. Puppet fucker actually has to counsel his kid. M&M’s have the cute m&m guys, Progressive has flo and DirecTV has puppet fucker. Great, just super peachy great…” It’s sort of jazzy!”
What are your thoughts about the puppet fucker?
